Common Myths About Alpacas
- Alpacas don't have crias at night - this is so NOT true. I know of three,
perfectly healthy crias that were born this spring after 7 p.m. in
absolutely normal births. One of them was at 9:30 p.m.!
- Alpacas always poop in a communal pile - this is kind of true; unless they
are tired, lazy, too hot, or too cold in which case they poop where ever
they are at the time which is usually right at the exit (or our entrance) to
where they eat and sleep.
- Poop piles should be cleaned up "every bean, every day." Not
only is this not true, it is not realistic. Unless you have a really bad
parasite problem, there is no need to spend your entire life scooping poop!
- You would be surprised how many times I am asked whether or not there is
any truth to the old saying that if an alpaca spits in your eye you will go
blind. SERIOUSLY? If an alpaca spits at you all you are going to need is a
bath; not an eye doctor.
